There are certain items that every single man is absolutely required to own. Whether it’s a dress shirt for a special occasion, or a baseball cap and shades for those times when the sun comes shining through.
Being a man means being prepared, and these 9 items are simply my top picks out of a large list of items every man needs in his wardrobe.
1) A Watch
Nowadays everyone carries a cellphone around and men believe the need to wear a watch is quickly fading away. Realistically though, this couldn’t be any further from the truth. A wrist watch is a fantastic way to show off your accessory style game, and a great conversation starter.
When buying a watch, you need to know what occasion you’re buying the watch for first. Just like shoes, a watch is not a one-size-fits-all item. A sports watch does not fly in a business meeting, and you probably do not want to wear a high-end Rolex in the gym. A quick tip is to look at the shoes you’re wearing and find a watch to match that level of formality
Originally used in the military during the Spanish-American War, the chinos were designed with tapered legs to conserve materials. Overtime the chino became even slimmer and the chino today has varying levels of fit to accommodate a large variety of people’s tastes.
Chinos also come in a variety of colors, the most versatile of which is tan (or light brown). These pair well with nearly anything, from t-shirts to dress shirts. But if you’re looking to raise your style game, grab a pair of sky blue chinos and match them with walnut oxfords and a white dress shirt for the ultimate business casual summer look!

Not only a fantastic accessory, but also absolutely the most important item a man should wear when going out into the sun, a pair of stylish sunglasses. The sun sends out harmful Ultraviolet radiation which can cause severe damage to the eyes, luckily sunglasses helps to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun.
When shopping for sunglasses you need to find the best shades to accentuate and compliment your face shape and features. There are four main categories: Round, Oval, Square and Heart.
Oval faces can pull off nearly anything. With a round face you’ll want to stick with square edges. With a square face you should stick with rounded shades. And with a heart shaped face, you’ll want to find light and small frame sunglasses.

Jeans have been on men’s required wardrobe list for decades. When they were invented in 1873 they were used as sturdy work pants for the everyday man, but as they evolved over the years jeans have become an absolute staple in every man’s wardrobe.
A classic pair of slim fit navy jeans is easily the most versatile option. You can dress it up with dress shoes and a dress shirt or dress it down with sneakers and a t-shirt. Just note that ripped jeans can absolutely not be dressed up in a professional setting.
5) Leather Jacket
There is a time and place for peacoats and puffer jackets, but it’s always the right time for a black leather jacket. When buying a leather jacket, make sure the materials state natural and not synthetic. Synthetic leathers, or faux leathers, simply do not hold up as long as their natural counterparts do. Real leather also looks better as it ages, whereas synthetic leather starts to fade and tear after only a few months of use.
Popularized by Hollywood in the 40s and 50s, the leather jacket with its durable and sturdy material has stood the test of time and earned itself a prime spot in the must buy list for every single guy.
6) Baseball Cap
You probably didn’t expect baseball cap to be on this list. Everyone has those lazy days where you just toss on a hat and walk out the door. You don’t need to be attending a baseball game or playing sports to wear one either. Nowadays, everybody, from the ultra-rich to the average joe, is wearing a baseball cap.
Finding the right baseball cap is as simple as picking a color, choosing a brand, and finding the right size. Men simply look great in a baseball cap, so pick your favorite and don’t forget to throw on a great pair of shades too.
7) Dress shirt & 8) Dress Shoes
These two basically go hand-in-hand. Regardless of your professional life, every man needs a dress shirt and dress shoes for the occasional wedding or job interview. If you’re not in a business profession you probably don’t need a variety of dress shoes and dress shirts, so look for something that can be mixed and matched with lots of different outfits.
When shopping for a dress shoe, stick with brown colors in a simple lace up design. Walnut or dark brown lace ups are the most versatile options because you can dress them up or down depending on the outfit.
If you don’t need multiple dress shirts and only need one or two for the special occasion, pick up a white or business blue dress shirt. These look great with any skin tone and can be worn with the brown dress shoes you just picked up, and a classic pair of chinos or jeans depending on the event.
9) Leather Belt
Finally, to tie it all together, a classic leather belt. If your pants have loops, wear a belt. Nothing makes an outfit go from a 10 to a 1 faster than forgetting to wear a belt. Belts come in all sorts of styles and sizes, but as a rule of thumb, slim belts are formal and big belts or belt buckles are casual.
When shopping for a belt you want to find a size where the belt will close around the middle hole. This will look the best and give you some wiggle room if your waistline happens to change. Final belt tip: always color match your shoes and belt.
Men should strive to have an outfit in their wardrobe for any occasion. You never know when your best friend is getting married, when your dream job is hiring, or when your girlfriend wants to take a stroll along the beach.
As a man you need to be prepared for anything, and your wardrobe is a fantastic place to start!
